Back Lane House: a note taken from my grandfather's (Mr T A Metcalfe-Gibson) diary for Tuesday 15 March 1887...

"I looked Back Lane House over and decided on alterations. I had the church clock face (dated 1719) brought up to our new house (Elm Lodge) and the painters cleaned it. It had been all papered over and used as part of the ceiling of a back bedroom."

The church clock face now hangs in the passageway in St Oswald's Church.

Back Lane House is now known as 'Manor House', but when this change of name took place I do not know.

The following verse was told to me by Derek Boustead who lived for a while at Scar Cottage in the 1970s -

"Robinson Fawcett lived on t'Scar
He had two feet, they warn't a par
You called stonk
Tuther step leet
Pray, Robinson Fawcett' look to thee feet!!"

Derek tells me that this was passed on to him by his Great Aunt Annie Shaw, who was born a Miss Capstick.
