Groups News Groups are like notice boards on the Internet. You can leave a text message on a News Group for people to read later. It is like pinning a message to a notice board for someone to read later. Messages are typed in by the keyboard. If someone wants to reply to your message they can do so by sending their own message to the News Group. Several people can reply to a message. This means that several people can get involved in a discussion at once. Indeed News Groups are also referred to as Discussion Groups as well as Usenet. There are thousands of News Groups. They have titles which indicate what topics should be discussed. Examples are rec.arts.books (books on art in a recreational News Group), rec.outdoors.fishing.fly (fly fishing in an outdoor recreation News Group) To get to the News Groups your Web Browser needs to be set up to allow access to them. Alternatively special viewing software must be used (eg Free Agent). Since neither of these options may be available on the computer you are using the examples looked at here are Web based News Groups. WARNING - Uncensored News Groups contain the very worst of unacceptable material on the Internet including peodeophile discussion groups. Since the Internet is an international resource it is difficult to police and it is virtually impossible to stop people placing this kind of material on the Internet. You should definitely not let young children explore uncensored New Groups without an adult present.
