There is a disproportionately large number of painters, both professional and amateur in the two villages of Ravenstonedale and its near neighbour Newbiggin-on-Lune. Could this be due in part to the special qualities of light and clean air that we enjoy? Set between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks these beautiful villages lend themselves to the quiet activities of art lovers from around the world.

In times past Edward Jeffrey, a very accomplished Landscape painter and illustrator of the 'Toby Twirl' children's books, published 1946 - 1958, lived in Ravenstonedale.
