Broadband and Internet Access in Ravenstonedale
The Newbiggin-on-Lune (015396 23) exchange was
Broadband enabled (2Mbps) on 2nd February 2005 and later upgraded to 8Mbps. However the actual speed achieved is very dependent on where you live in the parish. The further you live from the exchange the slower will be your connection. You can test your broadband speed using the links below. When testing your speed it is probably worth using more than one checker. Remember that your download speed (typically 0.9 - 5.5Mbps) will be significantly higher than your upload speed (typically 400Kbps).
Free WiFi
Both pubs in Ravenstonedale provide free WiFi for customers (Black Swan and King's Head). You do not ned to be a resident of the hotels. Just turn up at the pub with your laptop, buy a coffeee or something stronger and you are welcome to make use of WiFi. Usernames and passwords are available in the pubs.
Mobile Dongle Access (3G)
As yet there is no 3G signal in Ravenstonedale. Access to the internet via a mobile dongle is therefore very limited with download speeds usually less than dial-up connection speeds.
Cumbria Superfast Broadband Campaign
Our MP, Rory Stewart, is heading a campaign to bring superfast broadband to
all regions of Cumbria. Progress is posted on a dedicated website on which each parish has a mini website. The campaign aims to involve the people of Cumbria in bringing superfast broadband to their communities. If you would like to help go to the dedicated website, register and get involved.

Residents Broadband Speed Test
As part of the superfast broadband campaign we are asking residents to check their broadband speeds. Check your speed by clicking on the link below and complete the Results Form. Feel free to submit an average or typical result as speeds are dependant on the volume of internet traffic and will vary at different times of the day.
We assume that you obtain your broadband in the usual way from an ISP such as BT, Talk Talk, Virgin etc. If this is not the case please contact us. This means it is ADSL. Your recorded speed may depend on whether your computer is connected to your router by cable or by wireless. Routers connected by cable will yield consistently higher speeds. Wireless connections can yield slower speeds if the distance from the router is excessive.
Submitted results go direct to Chris Elphick, Clerk to Ravenstonedale and Orton Parish Councils. Chris will co-ordinate the results to create a map of existing broadband speeds as a basis from which to move forward. We will publish results on this site at a future date. Names will not be included in any published results.
