Fothergill Weekend 16th - 18th June 2006

The object was to have a 'gathering of the clans' show people around the area, visiting old Fothegill Homes, see the church with it's and commemorative windows and the Fothergill Silver and have talks on the family history. We hope that this will be an enjoyable and interesting experience for the Fothergill family.

At the same time it would help the church, (a grade 1 listed building,) which has been given £50,000 by English Heritage, but has to raise a similar amount itself for the necessary restoration work. Programme for the weekend...

Friday 16th June

Arrived in time for a welcome drink and Introduction Talk and Slide Show at Newbiggin on Lune Public Hall at 8 pm. Attendants given a 'Welcome Pack' which included an information booklet, an admission ticket to the 'open' Fothergill Houses and Fothergill Map, produced exclusively for the event by local artist Caroline A Metcalfe-Gibson which featured the most important houses connected with the Fothergill Family.

Saturday 17th June Breakfast with accommodation provider and then spent the day touring round the 'Open' Fothergill Houses which were clearly indicated on a map and open from 10am to 4 p.m. Visited some or all of them at leisure. St Oswald's open from 10 a.m. with someone in attendance showing things that particularly relate to the Fothergill Family. Local History Exhibition plus coffee and biscuits made available from 10 am to 4 p.m. and a Fothergill Historian helped with enquiries. Sandwich Lunch made available at Newbiggin-on-Lune Hall from 12 to 2pm. Everyone gathered again at Newbiggin-on-Lune Hall for a Three Course Evening Meal at 7.30pm.

Sunday 18th June

A special service of thanksgiving for the Fothergill Family at St Oswalds at 10.30 am followed by coffee and biscuits. For those staying a little longer there was the option of a gentle meander with a guide in the afternoon on Fell End Clouds to look at the Flora & Fauna and the old Lead Mines.

Accommodation and Cost

A few parishioners offered accommodation in their own homes. Also a variety of B & B and Hotel accommodation was made available. The cost for the weekend was £175 for a Home Stay or B&B or £205 for a hotel. Numbers were strictly limited to 80 people and booking were on a 'first come-first served basis'.

What's was included - And Not

The cost included:
Two nights Accommodation with Full English Breakfast.
A Welcome Pack including a map of the parish produced especially for this event.
A Local History Talk, Slide Show and refreshments at Newbiggin-on Lune Hall on Friday evening.
Admission to a number of Fothergill Houses with a minibus shuttle service.
Admission to the Local History Exhibition.
Sandwich Lunch and Three Course Evening Meal on Saturday.

Gentle meander with a guide on Sunday afternoon.Dinner on Friday was not included. The Black Swan offered an 'early evening special', served from 6 p.m. and free transport was provided from there to Newbiggin-on-Lune Hall. The Black Swan offered traditional Sunday Lunch at a cost of £12.00.
